Yellowjacket Wasps and Hornets: Always treat them with respect. Last August while I was parking my old farm trailer in the tall grass, next to our vegetable garden, I was surprised by a swarm of Yellojacket wasps that buzzed around my ears, but luckily did not attack. It was only after they settled down that I was able to unhook the wagon from the tractor…very carefully, of course. I then noticed the gray paper nest on the ground, about the size of a basketball, with the entrance at the bottom. The wheels missed it by mere inches. This was not my first encounter with wasps and hornets.

Turn back the clock many years, and, as a small boy, I was walking in the bushes behind my grandfather’s barn, the same land my brother Remi and I farm today. There, I came face to face with a hornet’s nest…too late… before I could get away, four hornets painfully stung me on the fore head, and it took a few days for the swelling to go down. It was there that I learned to respect hornets and wasps.

A few years later I noticed a hornet’s paper nest on one rafter of our pig pen. In those days we kept a pig on our family farm. This nest was about the size of a grapefruit and looked innocent enough…I could see hornets flying in and out of it, and, remembering the earlier incident, kept my distance. My father decided that he would soak a rag in oil, tie it to a long pole and burn it at night. The long pole treatment sounded good to me, and in broad daylight, flirting with danger, I nudged the nest a bit…to see what would happen…it fell to the ground and the pig ate it on the spot, hornets and all.

Fast forward to the mid 1990’s and I’m leading a group of interested people on a museum field trip to a spot where our villagers had dug for gold in 1885 … without getting rich. We were walking on a less traveled path in the woods when I heard some yelling and people running for their life…Yellowjackets were on the attack, and as I was wearing tall rubber boots and being first in the path I was spared the agony of wasp painful stings.

The following winter I went alone and investigated the path and found the wasp nest just under the sod, we had stepped right on it.

Meanwhile back on the range, or rather back to my vegetable garden, summer wore on, the wasps were minding their own business under my old farm wagon, and I did not give them any reason not to. I have a hunch that these wasps had been pollinating my Scarlet Runner beans and Broad beans all summer. I could easily have burned them out at night, but I did not have the heart to do that…after all, they had been helping me all summer, burning their home just didn’t seem right.

Observing the wasp’s nest became sort of a daily routine; it got so that I could stand about three feet from the nest and the wasps would just fly in and out and totally ignore me. I was no longer a threat to them, yet, best to keep one’s distance. Some would be taking off as others were coming in for the landing; they were a busy bunch of bees, or rather a busy bunch of wasps. When the grass started dying and turning yellow, the nest became that much more visible…my old wagon gave it protection from the rain and wind.As September turned into October, I learned that wasps mind the cold weather; no longer would I see them leaving the nest. To get any action I had to tap the paper nest gently with a bean pole, a few wasps would fly out to investigate but return inside very quickly, the fighting spirit, earlier displayed, was completely gone.By fall there was no sign of life with the wasps, carefully, I took the nest apart to investigate, only two insects were inside…neither was the queen wasp… they were too weak to fly and just fell to the ground.

Life cycle had played its role with the Yellowjackets, only the queen who had left the nest earlier to hide will survive over winter to reproduce. On the life of hornets and wasps I know very little, but I know this…always treat them with respect and honor their existence.

April Fools day

There isn't any solid facts around the origin of April's fools day.
But one possibility is that April Fool originated during the time in the 16th century when New years day was celebrated at spring (the vernal equinox), with festivities ending on 1st April.
Back then communication wasn't too great & some may have continued to celebrate the "old" new year hence becoming known as "April Fools".
The there is the story of "Poisson d'Avril" ... fish who were hungry and foolishly easy to lure and catch.
I like the first scenario better.

Hersey's Kisses

Well, well, well. An unofficial survey at work revealed that 3 of us find that the smell of a Hersey's kiss, just as it passes under your nose, headed for your mouth... has an unpleasant smell. A smell similar to that of vomit.
Anyone else notice?

Facebook and Syphilis

In the UK, they have made a study about syphilis and social networking. The link is that these social networks are encouraging sexual predators and make casual -sex hookups a breeze. This has led to a four-fold increase in syphilis cases. ( mostly young women)

So there you go. Keep your butt on your computer chair.

Warm Welcome

Warm welcome for sure. Started my period this weekend after having missed it in February. I knew I shouldn't be pregnant, but after being regular for 34 years, and only late twice for pregnancies, it was rather unsettling at the start. Could anything tied have come undone ?

Loverboy was getting ready to go fishing and having an early supper when he mentioned my period, or lack of it.

"Actually, I never had my period, and I am a week late" caused him to look up from his plate, fork in hand.

He looked very serious and said " don't call the boat to tell me your pregnant. Wait till I come home."

I laughed. He never did.

Later, when heading out the door, I get my kiss and he says... "Wow. What would we do if you were?"

I said..." well after I am done crying, I guess we'd have a baby."
He laughed. I never did.

BBQ Steak

The best BBQ steak I can eat , is one cooked with the following sauce.

Mix equal parts of regular BBQ sauce, and Montreal steak spice. ( I mean a bottle of the wet rub mixture. It's found with the spices at the grocery store, not with the BBQ sauce)

Put sauce on your steak. Cook with BBq cover open, about 7 -10 minutes per side. Turn only once.

You won't be dissappointed.

Pay Me

Attended the Girls Night Pay Me game/karaoke last night. There was a couple fairly new faces. The Good-One was there, and it's always nice to see her. So was KLS who dropped a wildcard, and faster than the speed of light, picked it up. She was forgiven..THIS TIME ! Dingdong was also there. That's a poor nickname for her, I hope she forgives me, as she is far from a real dingdong, and seems to be a pretty good singer too. The best thing about a gathering of women is the laughter. And there was no shortage last night.... from stories of bad math (33 .5) teeth, ( or the lack of) being in Walmart locked out of the dressing room, wearing a bra and pants!

“summer” and “winter” squash

~~Summer squash are thin-skinned and bruise easy , like zucchini, and are good for about a week in the refrigerator before they begin to soften and wrinkle.
~~Winter squash, on the other hand, ~~ is very hard . When I buy it, I make sure it has the stem. Some have their stems broken off. The longer stem the better.... I once read. ( sounds a bit like a sex tip... you'll be smiling in the produce aisle next time you pick out a squash)
Because of it's thick skin, it can last up to 3 months in a cool place. I keep mine in the garage. I always microwave my whole squash for at least one minute, before peeling and cutting. You wouldn't believe how easier it will be to cut. Winter squash is delicious ! ~~Winter squash are drier—they contain less moisture—than summer squash. ~~

In the arms of the angels

Early this morning, with a loud thunderous roar heard throughout the community, the gates of heaven open and slammed shut, as the sweetest lady ever joined the angels in heaven.
At 99, she now could leave us on earth, and join those who awaited her. My fondest memory of her was when I fixed a blanket she had over her as she settled for a nap. I brought it up to her chin, and tucked it in. I couldn't resist kissing her on the cheek. I said " There you go."

She smiled at me and said : "I love you too".

I have had an extensive conversation via facebook about ketchup with BB's lover. He puts ketchup on bacon sandwiches. I can't teach him any sandwich etiquette, but then again, he does use ketchup on eggs. It's likely pointless to try. This picture is for you. Another good use for ketchup.

March is national celery month in the US. I'm a bit late in letting you know. Hope you can excuse me.
I am not a big fan of celery. The neatest thing about celery is that it has 'negative calories' - that is, the amount of calories in the celery is less than the number of calories used to digest it.
I don't like the stringy floss-like part of it. It has a nice design however, easy to hold, firm, nice colour, and you can fill the groove with something worthwhile. For me, the best ways to enjoy celery is in a soup, or in a Bloody Mary.

Iceland's volcano filmed

Here's a two minute clip of Iceland's latest volcano. Just marvelous ! They fear that the Fimmvorduhals eruption will trigger a much larger eruption at Katla. Katla is the sister volcano to Helka, which we saw, with the snow gone off the top. From what I understand Fimmvorduhal is in a non-glacial area, but the sisters are in a glacial region, and eruptions there would cause flooding. Maybe we should soon return & call Ingi to be our guide again ? (with speed limitations , of course)

10:57 pm

10:57 pm. I am in bed with a cool Loverboy on one shoulder and the angel on the other. No devil around. The bed is too cool, is the complaint.

SO I give in. We change the bed sheets and put warm flannel.

11:20 pm... all is well. Loverboy fast asleep under sheets, and I almost asleep with my legs on top of the sheets to cool off.

I wonder what the shirtless guy has on his bed for sheets.
Yes, you got it ! The grey haired, tanned guy, who roams between Tusket and Yarmouth.

911 call

Gotta love those little girls. Listen to this 911 call.

March Mumbo Jumbo

You know you're getting old when your kid is gone to the health club, and friends you went to school with are becoming grandparents. Wow. At work I even have a gentlemen , in his late 90's, who asks for "la Veille" when he's looking for me.

Secret Renovations are no longer secret. Hands on his hips, the Silent One said " c'est point une belle couleur." Then he looked around, and noticed the rest. "Who did you hire? "
No one. He just shook his head. Not another word.

Closets. I swear there is a closet monster in my linen closet. Things were getting unruly in there, and I decided to straighten it out. I found things in there that I thought were put into the attic. Some things I thought I had tossed. Was I saving it? Did I once have second thoughts, and at the last minute, kept it. Why do I do that? Is it hormonal ?

Speaking of the linen closet... Loverboy hugged me tonight and said,... I hope you put back the flannel sheets? .... I said.."Oh I just might, but if you are cold, just snuggle a little closer.".... he said he thought he was as close as he could get. I kissed him and smiled.
After I was done straightening the sheet sets in the closet, I thought about those cool summer sheets I put on my bed Saturday. Should I really put the flannel back on?
The devil sat upon my shoulder, and whispered in my ear. I smiled. I listened. I shut the door.

Hot Hot Hot

Iceland news~~An increase in activity at the Fimmvorduhals volcano this morning has led to the no-fly zone in southern Iceland being widened.
Volcanic activity near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier increased significantly at around 07.00 this morning, with a series of explosions sending a gas and ash cloud 4km into the air.

When we were there, they showed us a volcano, with melted snow atop it, as she was warming up !

Happy Spring

Today, spring arrives.

It happens when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal in all parts of the world. It's all really that simple.

For us, this is known as vernal or spring equinox. Equinox comes from Latin, and simply means "equal night". We know equi means equal, and "nox" is present when we say "buenas Noche "(good night) or when we speak of nocturnal animals.... pretty easy eh?

There you have it. Happy Spring at 1:32 PM EDT.

Secret Renovations Day 2..Final day

Things moved along faster than yesterday.
I had to remove the two doors and their mouldings to have them cut for the new floor. Dad helped me hang the mirror back up, and the Prince came over tonight to cut two doors. He brought his air nailer for me to use to reattach all the mouldings. Now all they need is a bit of paint. Wow ! That aiar nailer is such a cool machine and a time saver ! t sure saved a lot of nailing and punching. I should get one for Christmas. The floor looks super ! . I even had my bath there tonight to admire it all.
