Happy Halloween

Did you know the first jack'o lanterns were made out of turnip ? Unlike Ireland, here in America, we just happen to have many pumpkins, and thankfully they are easier to carve than a turnip.

Volcanic Ash & Salmon

I found this rather interesting.
Regarding British Columbia's Fraser River....
Salmon stocks were low in 2009.
Then a small volcano on an island blew iron rich volcanic ash .
The volcano was not big, but a storm carried the ashes.
In 2010, salmon stocks were at it's best.
Some scientist believe the iron likely boosted the salmon stocks and perhaps they should look at intentionally "fertilizing" the waters with iron.

Job gone to the dogs

Driving to Yarmouth today, I was telling my son about my summer jobs at the tourist bureau in Frost Park.
My co-worker, AGR, and I,once had a secret assignment planned.

My parents had a poodle they wanted to breed; and his parents had a male poodle.
So, on a Saturday, when the boss didn't come in, we brought our poodles in to do their deed.
We realized we couldn't just have them run around, so we put them into the boss' office with the door shut.
Behind our counter, there was a huge window which you could look into the boss' office, but since they were small dogs we knew no one could see them in action.

As we waited on a couple tourists, the mating dogs got in contact with the closed door. The door started banging, and it went on and on.
We kept our cool, and hid our embarrassment as the tourists kept glancing at the office.

As soon as they left, we turned the sign to close, and laughed, and laughed.
I don't remember if we ever reopened.

Hey Stubborn Surette !

SO, what d'ya think?

I now drive the speed limit in my community .

You seemed bored following me, head to one side, resting on your hand....

Halloween Treats

It's been over a month since I bought the Halloween treats.
They had a great deal on full size bars, so I bought 42 and hid them high.
I have seen seeing bar wrappers now and again in the garbage, so last night I got a chair, and stood on it to do the re-count. (I am now the only one who needs a chair to look in any cupboards)

The count was 12.
I don't mean 12 missing.
I mean 12 remaining.

They ate 30 bars.

I'd say they had enough treats.

Ronnie Milsap

Get your kleenex out.
Here's a great tune.
It was almost like a song.
Listen to it here.

As a young girl, I loved the muppets Frog Prince.
I loved the lullaby the frog prince sang to Sweetums.
I have sang it to the boys before... when I am misbehaving at bedtime...hehe
~~Sweetums, lay your ugly head
Down upon your wretched bed.

Close your eyes and go to sleep,

Rest, you hulking heap.
Sweetums is so sweet and cute,

Go to sleep, you stu-pid brute.~~

Today is National Potato Day in the USA.
Wow, that would be a change in diet. Not !

The men in this house love potatoes.
I am a rice girl.
Basmati is likely my favorite.

As for pototoes: mashed are my least favorite, and baked are my best. I always have one at Wendy's when I eat there; along with my spicy chicken fillet sandwich...

Shrimp Shells

I was reading an article about shrimp, and how you are better off buying shrimp with the shell on. Save your shells to make stock. Cover your shells with water and simmer. The stock is good for making a mild seafood flavoured rice to accompany a seafood dish. Or use to cook the pasta for a seafood dish. You can poach white fish in it, or save it to start a soup. You can freeze them until you are ready. (Said you could do the same with lobster shells)
I once heard of a woman who saved them, and when leaving her husband, she neatly stuffed them into the rod pockets of the curtains throughout the house. Apparently they made quite a stinky problem and was almost impossible to discover.

New Reality show

Forget the Deadliest Catch... maybe they should make a new reality show.
It'll be the "Dangerous job of the pizza delivery man."

Very, very, sad, and unfortunate, indeed.
Someone's son. Gone.

Barbie Dolls

What about those Barbie Doll cases ? My Lord ! Weren't they the best? With the little hangers, and the drawer that pulled opened?

And at Tante Louise's, they had the best Barbie house ever! Even had a lamp that came on ! Talk about being technologically advanced in 1975!

Only in Canada?

Nope ! My blog has been viewed in ten countries since May of this year.
Canada of course, and countries such as Germany, South Korea, Russia, and Moldova ! Pretty exciting !
Moldova ? And where is that, you ask? Well it's a land locked country between Romania and Ukraine.... I had to look it up.

Monday's Sexual health Post

Good Monday Morning. Today's' topic is Menstruation and Sex.
Is it okay to have sex while your are menstruating? Sure it is. It's harmless.

Some cultures, however frown upon sex during your period, as menstrual blood is viewed as dirty and unclean.

I think the biggest reason to avoid it, is called M.E.S.S.Y.
(and that reason itself works for me.)
There are precautions to having sex during your period however. Remember the cervix, and the os that opens a bit when women bleed? Well that opening increases your risks for sexually transmitted diseases. Also, menstrual blood may contain STD bacteria or viruses. Therefore, protection should be used if you are uncertain if you or your partner are free of any diseases.

Can you get pregnant? Well it's very unlikely, but possible. If your cycle is really not regular, and given the fact that sperm can live for 3 days, there could be a slight chance for pregnancy.

Most of us have sex on our minds during ovulation, and that's mother nature's way of getting us to reproduce. Smart eh? We should know that an orgasm relieves menstrual cramps, due to slight contractions of the uterus during orgasm. Orgasms will also shorten your period, as it will help the endometruim (lining of the uterus) to shed.

Many women find their sex drive picks up as soon as their period starts. I looked for an answer to that, but was unable to find a reason other than probably hormones.

I think we are just glad PMS is over, and the opposite sex no longer annoys us.

There's a new book out titled Ah-Choo. It's about colds and immune systems and all kinds of stuff. What it does say is that there is definitely a correlation between kids who grow up in germy environments, (such as a farm, or day care with runny noses, etc.) than those who do not. These germy kids are less apt to grow up with allergies and asthma.
Just saying.

Kindle E-Reader

During my "celebrate" spring retreat, I had the chance to use and frig with, a Kindle e-reader.
It's a great idea for those who are avid readers of anything. You can download, purchase books, for a fraction of the price and read it on your kindle. It does lots of stuff, but is amazingly simple to use.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday to the golfer from over chickie's pond.
I'm sure you'll have a great day.
I ran into your aging husband in the bank parking lot.
He said he hasn't been reading my blog this week, as you're the one who does and fills him in.
But he's only really interested in the Monday's posts anyway. That's what he said ...hehe.
Happy Birthday.
Keep your ball on the fairway.

He thinks he'll keep her

I heard Mary Chapin Carpenter on the radio at Sobeys this week. They were playing Passionate Kisses. I hadn't heard her in a long time. I looked up another song of hers. LISTEN TO IT HERE
Good lyrics.

She makes his coffee, she makes his bed
She does the laundry, she keeps him fed
When she was twenty-one she wore her mother's lace
She said "forever" with a smile upon her face
She does the car-pool, she PTAs
Doctors and dentists, she drives all day
When she was twenty-nine she delivered number three
And every Christmas card showed a perfect family
Everything runs right on time, years of practice and design
Spit and polish till it shines. He thinks he'll keep her
Everything is so benign, safest place you'll ever find
God forbid you change your mind. He thinks he'll keep her
She packs his suitcase, she sits and waits
With no expression upon her face
When she was thirty-six she met him at their door
She said I'm sorry, I don't love you anymore

More on that tune

I was just showing the video of " To make you feel my Love" to Son #1. Afterwards we watched Billy Joel play it. Apparently Bob Dylan wrote it, and asked Billy to cover it for him.
Billy Joel 's music if often played throughout our home.

Here's one of my favorites... I love his intro and the video is excellent. The band seems to be so relaxed, mulling around, playing instruments, yet making a fabulous sound .... Don't ask me why.

and another favorite is HONESTY ... which I have already posted a couple times on this blog.
Lyrics are awesome. Crank it up.

Food Bank Drive

Tomorrow is the Food Bank Drive throughout West Pubnico... may as well get your stuff ready today.

Make you feel my love

When the rains blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case...

appropriate lyrics for today :)

It's a great song and I heard it tonight on the movie "When in Rome." Listen to it here !
Wish Son #1 would learn it !

Did you know if you remove bar soaps from their packaging when you first bring them home, not only will they make your washroom smell good, they'll harden somewhat, won't melt as easy in water, and will last longer.

Sweet Dan

There's one thing I don't know about Sweet Dan.... and that's where he lives.
I gave him credit for the haystacks and cute little pumpkins and ghosts in his yard.
Little did I know, he doesn't live in Miss 'mirault's house.
The Sweet house is not even on the main road !
Thanks for setting me straight !

Hunter's Moon Tonight

Tonight is the Hunter's Moon .... The Hunter's moon is the first full moon after the Harvest moon, (which is the one nearest the autumn equinox, or fall) With the Hunter's Moon there's not much time between sunset and moonrise, therefore we get a lot of light all night... that's what makes it special.

And the brightest star in the sky is actually Jupiter.

My blonde moment

I shared a story with friends yesterday. It is true, and a testimony to how dumb we can sometimes be.
I was at Sobeys, with my sis, shopping for work. She sent me for tenderflake frozen pie shells.

I couldn't find them.
I stood right infront of where I thought they should be.
A Sobeys employee passed by, and I asked him for help.
"Yes", he said, "there they are".
I looked again, and still couldn't see them.
He pointed to the 2 shelves.
I said " well I see the frozen fruit flans, and the chicken pies..."

" 'Mam, that's just the picture on the box."

Awesome cashier

I read this today and wanted to share.
At the grocery store, a woman with just a few items went to the express "10 items or less " lane.
She noticed the lady infront of her had a quite a few items in her cart. More than ten for sure !
As that lady approached the conveyer belt, the cashier leaned over and said..

"So ? which 10 items would you like to buy?"
