Winter Date idea # 10

Find and tap maple trees for maple syrup !
Or visit Jim Conrad's Maple shack for a wonderful sweet experience.
The sap usually starts mid- Feb to mid- march, depending where you live. Sap flows when daytime temperatures are above freezing, and night time temperatures fall below freezing.
In our municipality, taps can be bought at Home Hardware.

Save $1378 easily

Start with a dollar a week and increase your savings by one dollar every week for 52 weeks. It goes something like this:
Week 1: $1, Account balance: $1
Week 2:  Add $2, Account balance: $3
Week 3: Add $3, Account balance: $6
By 52 weeks, you’ll have saved $1,378! Why it works: You’re starting off small and working on building the habit of saving.
The most you’ll ever need to put away is $52 in one week.

A friend had a concern that in December, when Christmas expenses and heating bills are high, the deposit amounts are also the highest. So she makes a chart and crosses out whatever amount she has chosen to save, depending on her weekly budget. Good idea !

Be real smart and double the amount....   you"ll save enough for a trip to warmer weather in 2016 !

Winter Date idea #9

Go snowmobiling !
We have 47 kilometers of trails in our municipality and from the Great Pubnico Lake, there is a trail linking seven lakes, passable if the lakes are frozen.

Ham and Egg quiche

To use leftover ham, I made a couple quiches.
Had to keep it simple so the family would all eat it.

In an uncooked shell, I added a cup of ham.
Sprinkled a cup of grated cheese on top.
Beat 3 eggs and 3/4 cup of milk.
It also called for onion, salt and pepper.
I didn't add salt.

Bake at 30 degrees F for 45 minutes.

I made two and put them in the oven with the oven set to come on.
While I visited my niece and babies, they cooked. (I over cooked them a tiny bit.)

But we all enjoyed it !

For my liking, they were not deep enough, and I would have liked peppers and perhaps some broccoli. Next time I will use 4 eggs, and 1 cup milk.

At Seventeen .. Janis Ian

Image result for at seventeen

She's older now, but by golly, she sounds the same.
A song that touches all women. It's about feeling alienated while growing up.
Enjoy !

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
and high school girls with clear skinned smiles
who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth
And those of us with ravaged faces
lacking in the social graces
desperately remained at home
inventing lovers on the phone
who called to say - come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
whose name I never could pronounce
said - Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
The rich relationed hometown queen
marries into what she needs
with a guarantee of company
and haven for the elderly
Remember those who win the game
lose the love they sought to gain
in debentures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
exceeds accounts received at seventeen
To those of us who knew the pain
of valentines that never came
and those whose names were never called
when choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
when dreams were all they gave for free
to ugly duckling girls like me
We all play the game, and when we dare
we cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
that call and say - Come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
at ugly girls like me, at seventeen

Dr Laura

I traveled on business this week, and tuned in to Dr Laura.
I had never listened to her show before.
It was entertaining and kept me alert.

She is a bit harsh, holy mackerel. I tried to remember some lines that I wanted to share.

  • Men are not complicated. We women are.
  • How do you get self-esteem? By continually impressing yourself
  • A lousy relationship is never better than no relationship at all
  • The 10 commandments aren't prefaced with " if you're in the mood".
  • Paul Newman who could have had many lovers, never strayed from his wife. He said " why have hamburger, when I get steak at home?"    So, be the steak.

The best thing

Some thing are just too good to be true !
I have loads of grey hair, and of course I dye it brown.
So when it grows out, I try to hide the grey.
I call it my skunk line.
And it's bed.
CBC news interviewed me on a wharf last month, and I told the camera man that the wind is a big enemy to older chicks with skunk lines. So to only film when the wind was died down.
Then I found out about this product ! A colored mousse to hide the grey ! Works like a charm !!!!
Found on the bottom shelf at Lawtons.
